Hey Oly!! Tell us your full name, where you are from and your age!
My name is Olianny Garcia, I’m 27 years old and I’m from Venezuela, Monaga – Maturin and I have been skating for almost 8 years now.

What else do you do besides skating?
I teach on my free time to adolescents in high school, I enjoy sports allot, going to the gym, doing yoga, pilates, balance… I also play the guitar, sometimes together with some good local friends.

Why did you start skating?
Since I was a child I had always liked street skate and I was always fascinated by the surf crew of some family friends, little by little I found out and discovered this passion for sports and that’s how the beautiful experience of riding a skate started..

Who or what motivated you the most in the beginning?
During the beginning what motivated me was the effort and perseverance put into something to achieve goals. Getting into the sport of longboarding & downhill means trying something new that creates some kind of challenge to my inner limits, where I could put to test my abilities, skills and focus. I was motivated by being a woman in a sport among so many guys, and the support I received from some very good friends from my old school who were key promoters also kept my motivation going .

Which one was the first spot you skated?
The first place where I skated was a freeway, a little inclination where I live in Monagas – Maturin, Venezuela. It was also the first time I had an awful crash hahaha! The old days!

What is your favorite spot now?
Spots, the favorite subject. There are hundreds of spots that make me fall in love, first because each one creates a new challenge. But in the end, one of my favorite spots is Caripe located in Monagas, nice weather, great landscape, kind people and mind-blowing roads.

What’s up with Venezuela? Do you like the place where you live?
Venezuela is a beautiful country and I’m amazed by the versatility of its states in terms of nature and culture. We have beautiful mountains, great beaches, people here are warm, kind and warriors. The weather can change from warm to cold and it’s just wonderful, this just to give some deeper thoughts. Is there something more beautiful and contradictory at the same time than Venezuela? <3

Are there many girls skating in your country?
Yes, for sure the number of girls practicing this sport has increased, it’s incredible because in the past there were so few, now there is a great number in different styles of longboarding and they are very good at it.

What would you say about the girls of other countries? How do you see them?
I’m delighted, amazed at their technique and their good vibes in a heat, I’m impressed by how receptive they are to meet knew people and how good they are in the crew.

Did you have the chance to meet some of them?
Luckily yes, I met a few: Romina Bessone (Arg) a beautiful rad girl that I had the chance to share a lot and we connected in such a great way, she is pretty cool and a good friend. The girls from Colombia, Jenny Salazar, Laura Vargas, Ma. Chiappe and Juls Sanchez, they all were so nice people. Georgia Bontorin (Bra) she is just such a sweet girl, Amanda Powell (Usa) and Elena Corrigal (Can) they both are super sweet and cool, I was amazed by how we clicked and how much we learned from each other.

Have you traveled to another country to skate?
I had the opportunity of going to Bogota, Colombia to the Festival de la Bajada, an amazing experience. I’m speechless!

What places would you like to go and skate?
There are plenty! Peru (Morro Solar, Tarma), Argentina (La Violenta), Brasil (Teutonia, Mega Space), Colombia (Festival de la Bajada), USA (Angie’s Curves, Maryhill), Czech Republic (Kozákov Challenge), Alemania (Allmatrieb), among others, it would be a dream come true…

What about sight-seeing? What countries would you visit? (not related to longboarding)
It would be inspiring and awesome to go to India.

What was your setup in the beginning?
Well I started with a Comet Voodoo Doll, Randal trucks 180º with a 42 baseplate, orangatang wheels 4president 86A, Red Bones Ceramic bearings and a Roger Bross footstop.

What about now? How does it look like?
Sold! hahahahaha. I still have the footstop, the wheels (that seem to be indestructible) and the bearings.

Why do you think that the setup changes? Based on what are those changes?
It’s important to change because as you are evolving you discover what you need in your setup, board, trucks, wheels, bearings, bushings… It changes based on the technological advances and because it’s better to have different setups depending on the hill, the wheelbase can change to have more ability and the wheels can change depending on the size, smaller to speed up and bigger for a bigger faster speed.

What styles do you like more?
Definitively Downhill Skateboarding is my passion, even though I really enjoy a good crosstep and I’m learning to do fast freeride.

Which one would you say you are better at?
Downhill Skateboarding without doubt.

Do you have any sponsors in the moment?
Right now I’m part of the Doble Cero Team which is a very well-known Skateshop in my country, they give us plenty of support and Ondanov has been a great promoter.

How do you see yourself compared with guys where you live?
Well, ever since I started to skate it has been with guys and so far I continue doing so. I think the level is not that different in downhill and techniques, they have some very good techniques and I don’t doubt that I have them too. I think that comparing in terms of skating to men with women or women with men is a relative thing, anything can happen and each one has an unique skill and ability 😀

Hola Oly!! Contanos cómo es tu nombre completo, de donde sos y qué edad tenés!
Mi nombre es; Olianny García, tengo 27 años de edad y soy de Venezuela, Monagas – Maturín y llevo casi 8 años patinando.

Qué haces además de patinar?
Doy clases en mi tiempo libre a adolescentes de la secundaria, disfruto de hacer mucho deporte, del gym, del yoga, pilates, balance.. Hago música, toco mi guitarra y comparto con buenos amigos locales.

Qué se te dió por patinar?
Desde chica siempre me ha gustado el skate street y siempre me fascinó la escena del surf por parte de algunos amigos de la familia, poco a poco investigando fue que descubrí esta pasión por el deporte y básicamente así floreció la bonita experiencia que te da el montarte en una patineta.

Quién o qué te motivo más al principio?
Al principio me motivo el esfuerzo y la constancia que se pone en escena para lograr objetivos al desempeñarte en esta disciplina deportiva que es el longboard, probar algo nuevo que generara algún tipo de reto a límites internos en donde pusiera en práctica la habilidad, destreza y concentración como es el Downhill Skateboarding. En primer lugar me motivo la iniciativa propia de practicarlo siendo mujer entre tantos chicos, además de varios buenos compañeros de la vieja escuela que ayudaron bastante y fueron grandes impulsores.

Cuál fue el primer spot en el que patinaste?
El primer lugar donde patine sin duda alguna fue en una autopista, un pequeño plano inclinado situado en la ciudad donde vivo, Monagas – Maturín, Venezuela. También fue la primera vez que tuve la más aparatosa caída de mi vida hahaha! Que tiempos!

Cuál es tu spot favorito ahora?
Los Spots; el tema favorito, pues existen centenares de spot que me dejan enamorada, primeramente porque cada uno de ellos genera un reto diferente, en definitiva uno de mis spots favoritos es Caripe localizado en Monagas, hermoso clima, maravilloso panorama, gente hospitalaria y rutas alucinantes.

Qué onda con Venezuela? Te gusta el lugar donde vivís?
Venezuela es un país hermoso y por supuesto me maravilla la versatilidad de sus estados hablando en términos de naturaleza y cultura. Tenemos hermosas montañas, hermosas playas, su gente es cálida, noble y guerrera, un clima cambiante de frío y calor simplemente maravilloso, profundizando un poco más; Hay algo más bello y contradictorio que Venezuela? <3

Hay muchas chicas patinando por ahí?
Si, definitivamente se ha incrementado la cantidad de nenas que practican este deporte, es increíble antes eran muy pocas, ahora hay una cantidad increíble en diversas modalidades del longboard y muy buenas en su desempeño.

Y qué dirías de las chicas de otros países? Cómo las ves?
Encantadísima, maravillada con la técnica que poseen y la buena onda que transmiten al compartir un heat al patinar, me dejan impresionada sobre todo por lo receptivas al conocer y lo buenas que son en escena.

Tuviste la chance de conocer a algunas?
Afortunadamente si, conocí a varias: Romina Bessone (Arg) una mostrita hermosa con la que tuve el chance de compartir más y nos conectamos de una manera genial, muy buena onda y buena amiga, las chicas de Colombia, Jenny Salazar, Laura Vargas, Ma. Chiappe, Juls Sánchez lindas personas. Georgina Botorin (Bra) es un amor de nena, Amanda Powell(LA) y Elena Corrigal(Can) super dulce y buena onda, quede maravillada con la amistad que enlazamos todas y con la técnica, aprendimos mucho de cada una.

Has viajado a otro país a patinar?
Tuve la oportunidad de viajar a Bogotá Colombia al Festival de la Bajada, una experiencia increíble. Sin palabras!

A qué lugar(es) te gustaría ir a patinar?
Uffs! Perú (Morro Solar, Tarma) Argentina (La Violenta), Brasil (Teutonia, Mega Space) Colombia (Festival de la Bajada) California (Angie’s Curves), Kozákov Challenge (Czech Republic), USA (Maryhill), Alemania (Allmatrieb) entre muchas, sería un sueño…

Y a conocer? Qué país visitarías? (sacando el longboard)
Sería inspirador y lindazo conocer La India.

Cómo fue tu setup al principio?
Pues comencé con una Comet Voodoo doll, unos trucks Randal 180 base 42, Orangatang wheels 4President 70mm 86A, bearings Red Bones ceramic y un footstop Roger Bross.

Y ahora? como quedó?
Vendida! Haha! Aún conservo el footstop, las ruedas (que parecen indestructibles) y los bearings.

Por qué crees que va cambiando el setup? En base a qué cambia?
Es importante porque a medida que uno va evolucionando va descubriendo los requerimientos que uno busca en el setup, en la tabla, trucks, ruedas, bearings, bushings… Y cambia en base a que cada vez hay más avances tecnológicos y porque para algunas bajadas es conveniente tener varios setups, el WB puede cambiar para tener mas agilidad y las ruedas pueden cambiar dependiendo del tamaño, mas pequeño mas aceleración, mas grande mayor velocidad final.

Qué modalidades te gustan más?
Definitivamente el Downhill Skateboarding es mi pasión, aunque disfruto mucho de un buen Crosstep y aprendiendo del freeride rápido…

Y en cuál dirías que sos mejor?
Downhill Skateboarding sin duda.

Tenés algún sponsor ahora?
Por ahora pertenezco a el Team Doble Cero que es un Skateshop muy reconocido en mi país, nos brinda mucho apoyo y Ondanov que ha sido un gran impulsor.

Cómo te ves en cuanto al nivel de un chico de tu lugar?
Bueno desde que empecé a patinar ha sido con chicos y hasta ahora lo sigo haciendo, considero que el nivel no varía mucho en cuanto al downhill y técnicas, ellos poseen muy buenas técnicas y yo no dudo de las que poseo yo, creo que compararnos en cuanto a patinar hombres con mujeres o mujeres con hombres es bastante relativo, cualquier cosa puede pasar y cada quien posee una habilidad y destreza única.
